Someone Call Me a Cab(ernet): 2015 Macedon Cabernet Sauvignon

books + wine is the best thing ever.

books + wine is the best thing ever.

I've never really identified with the term low-key.

Technically, low-key means keeping something chill, or more restrained, but most of the time that doesn't really work for me. I'm more obsessively high-key. When I like something, it's not just "cool" or "great," it's "THE BEST THING EVER," or "OMG AMAZING." I tend to be really into the things I love, whether it's a place (hey Nashville!), a person or pet (don't get me started talking about my kitten Holland), or a movie (I had a regrettable Lord of the Rings phase early in my high school career). Conversely, the things I don't like tend to be "THE WORST THING EVER," (don't get me started on the word nestle).

Perhaps unsurprisingly, this also applies to most of my wine drinking experiences.

Yeah, I feel like a Force of Nature: 2013 Force of Nature Red Wine

...Those may be Oasis lyrics. Not from "Wonderwall," which if you know me is a surprise. I love me some "Wonderwall.

I love games.

Not as in, "daaaaaang that girl loves playing games," or as in "quit playing games with my heart," but actual games, like Catch Phrase, and Taboo, and Balderdash.

While I am admittedly terrible at any game involving strategy (I stay far away from Risk, Monopoly, and anything else that requires plotting), I love how playing games can bring a group of people together.

Recently, my friend group has been playing Cards Against Humanity. For those of you who may not be familiar with this game, think Apples to Apples, but with cards that are a little more... scandalous. (okay, maybe a lot more scandalous... sometimes I'm not even sure what a card actually is, but I know it's not good).

However, I've found that when playing Cards Against Humanity, the winning cards are not always necessarily the ones that make you gasp with embarrassment. Instead, they are the cards that are unexpected (A Falcon with a Cap on its Head is always a popular one), the ones that startle a laugh because despite what you were expecting- you weren't expecting "what makes a romantic evening" to end with A Really Cool Hat.

Just Gren(ache) and Bear It: 2013 Altes Garnatxa Negra

September 21, 2015 Molly Powers

Hello friends! Sorry for the hiatus- I visited my family in California last week, and have been spending my time readjusting to life in Nashville. But I'm back, and I feel like talking about Spanish wine.

Spanish wine is my jam.

I’ll confess- I never really grew up drinking “Old World” wines (these are wines that come from countries with long histories of winemaking, i.e. France, Italy, Slovenia… basically all of Europe)- instead, the first wines I learned to love were big California wines (usually veeeeeery different style-wise).

As much as the tradition of Old World wines impressed me, I was a little intimidated to buy a bottle of wine that was labeled domaine de something and was followed by a bunch of other words I didn’t know. These bottles usually had fancy flowing script on them, and typically looked too cool and grown up for my twenty-something year old palate. So I avoided them.

A Little Bit of Zinfandel in my life: Hey Mambo 2012 "Sultry Red"

Okay.... so I couldn't avoid making a Mambo No. 5 Joke. SORRY I'M NOT SORRY

Okay.... so I couldn't avoid making a Mambo No. 5 Joke. SORRY I'M NOT SORRY

There’s nothing like a great night with friends. One of those nights where you look at the people around you and think: Yes. This. We are 100% going to remember this night when we are 80 and sitting in our homes surrounded by cats (just me?).

Then there are the nights when no one can decide what to do and you end up having impromptu dance parties to classic jams like “Shake Yo Tailfeather,” and “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” which is more along the lines of the kinds of night that comes to mind when drinking the Hey Mambo 2012 “Sultry Red” blend.
